Most of us are aware of the need to set goals. Equally effectiveis our awareness of the need to plan for our goals, examples from which havebeen highlighted in the past few posts. Whenever we set goals and with well thought-outplans, we are unlikely to achieve it unless unless your daily activities (habits)already support it. For example if you were to set a goal of reducing in weightthis year. It is important that your eating habits do not negate your dreams. Itis therefore important that if your goal runs afoul of your current habits, you’ll need to change your habits in order to achieve your goal.
Suppose you set a goal to write a book, (which I know people telling me about the book they’rewriting for years without finishing) butyou aren’t already in the habit of writing on a regular basis (ideally daily). Most likely you’ll never complete the book. That goal will be a perpetual occurrenceon your wish-list.
How to identify and activate habits that supportyour goals.
When you set a new goal, and you are planning, you need to askyourself; what do I need to do every day to achieve this dream. Remember what Iam saying- everyday! It is important to begin to think in terms of dailyhabits, especially for big goals. Daily habits are easier to install than lessfrequent habits.
It’s also wise to think in terms of simple habits, not incrediblycomplicated ones. Simple habits are easier to install and maintain. You canalways add complexity later, but focus on getting the basic habit successfullyinstalled first.
If one of your goals is to write a book, a simple daily habitwould be to work on your book for at least one hour per day. If you can install and maintain that habit, completingyour book is practically a done deal. Even if you write only on weekdays andtake two weeks off, that’s still 250 hours per year you’ll be investing in yourbook. This simple discipline is enough to build a career as a professionalwriter.
The one assignment I have for you is this: What daily habit(s) would I need to cultivateto make to this goal achievable? The answer to that question willtell you what habit(s) to cultivate.
If you can condition and maintain thosehabits, you’ll very likely achieve your goal.
It’s only a matter of time.
